Yamaha EC-06 vs River Indie: How Different Are The Two Electric Scooters?

It’s no secret that the newly unveiled Yamaha EC-06 shares its foundation with the Bengaluru-based River Mobility's Indie electric scooter. After being in development for quite some time, the EC-06 has now made its debut. Here, we take a closer look at both models to see how the Yamaha compares with the River.

Yamaha EC-06 vs River Indie: Design and Styling

At first glance, both scooters share a similar silhouette with wide body panels, upright stance, and chunky proportions. However, the Yamaha EC-06 comes across as the more restrained of the two. The biggest difference is up front. The River Indie’s twin-square LED headlamps are housed in a blacked-out front panel, while the EC-06 packs a single, vertically integrated LED setup that sits higher within a glossy black fascia.

The Yamaha’s front cowl is also sleeker, with sharper creases and less visual bulk compared to the Indie’s boxier face. Viewed from the side, the similarities in structure are evident, but there are differences. The EC-06 features layered bodywork, while the Indie showcases large, flat surfaces with minimal cuts or creases.

Towards the rear, the EC-06 sports a sleeker LED taillight positioned below the seat, flanked by compact indicators. The River Indie’s rear setup looks chunkier, with a rectangular tail lamp that mirrors its front design.

Yamaha EC-06 vs River Indie: Powertrain and Battery Pack

Under the skin, the Yamaha EC-06 shares much of it with the Indie. It packs a 4 kWh battery paired with an electric motor that delivers 6.7 kW of peak power, allowing a claimed top speed of 90 kmph, akin to the River counterpart. The certified range for both scooters is also in the same ballpark, Indie at 163 km and EC-06 at 160 km per charge.

Yamaha EC-06 vs River Indie: Features and Storage

In terms of equipment, the Yamaha EC-06 closely mirrors the River Indie, featuring a colour LCD, three riding modes, and reverse assist. However, one key area where the two differ is underseat storage. The Indie offers a generous 43 litres, making it one of the most spacious in its segment, while the EC-06 provides a comparatively smaller 24.5 litres boot.

The Yamaha skips a front glove box, offering only a charging port in that space, whereas the Indie features a 12-litre storage compartment. Additionally, the Indie includes practical touches such as rider foot pegs, a luggage carrier, multiple hooks, and other utility-focused elements.

A bunch of details about the Yamaha EC-06 are yet to be revealed, including its features, dimensions and specifics of the suspension setup, though we expect the hardware to be in line with the Indie.

Yamaha EC-06 vs River Indie: Price

Yamaha has not revealed the scooter’s price; however, it is likely to command a premium over the River Indie, which is priced at Rs 1.46 lakh (ex-showroom, Bengaluru). We expect prices to sit between Rs 1.60 lakh and Rs 1.70 lakh mark. We will update this comparison as Yamaha rolls out more details on the EC-06.

Spy images of test mules have revealed that the SUV will get a rather squared off look up front with a flattish bonnet, rectangular grille and a split headlamp design with vertically oriented daytime running lamps. The front bumper looks to get a chunky lower section, which is likely to house a faux skid plate element to add some muscle to the design.

Other notable design elements include prominent squared-out fender flares, a large glass house and what look to be connected tail lamps around the back.

Tata Harrier Petrol, Safari Petrol Launch On December 9

Tata Motors will finally add petrol variants to the Harrier and Safari ranges, years after the original reports of the two SUVs getting the engine option. Since their inception, the current-gen Harrier and Safari have been diesel-only SUVs with standard front-wheel drive, with the Harrier only recently getting an all-electric derivative.

Tata Harrier VS Jeep Compass Web 14

As for the engine of choice, it is likely to be the same 1.5-litre turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection (T-GDI) mill that Tata unveiled at the Auto Expo back in 2023. The carmaker at the time had unveiled two units as part of its all-new Hyperion series - a 1.2-litre three-cylinder mill and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder unit. The former was good for 123 bhp and 225 Nm while the latter developed a notably stronger 168bhp and 280Nm - similar power as the 2.0-litre diesel but down on torque.

The 1.5 T-GDI unit would make perfect sense for the large SUV siblings, with the numbers on paper suggesting good levels of performance could be offered. The unit is expected to be paired with both manual and automatic gearbox options, the same as with the diesel. It, however, remains to be seen if the unit in the Harrier and Safari will make identical levels of power or if the company might have retuned the engine for a stronger output to better match the likes of the Mahindra XUV 700 petrol. The Mahindra gets a larger 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mill pushing out a strong 197 bhp and 380 Nm.

The rear continues the shift toward vertical elements, using tall LED tail lamps placed close to the edges. Spelt-out Telluride sits low across the panel.

Hyundai Tucson Discontinued In India: Delisted From Website

Hyundai’s flagship ICE SUV in India, the Tucson, has been delisted from the company’s website, and its sales have been discontinued. However, there has been no official confirmation from the brand yet. The current generation of the Tucson was launched in India in 2022 and saw decent success in its more than three-year stint in the country. However, in the more recent past, the SUV saw dwindling sales, which most likely prompted Hyundai to pull the plug.

Hyundai Tucson

The fourth-generation Tucson, when first launched, created quite a stir with its bold design, feature-loaded cabin and all-wheel drive capability. It entered a segment which had the likes of Jeep Compass, Citroen C5 Aircross and the Volkswagen Tiguan. The SUV came with both Petrol and Diesel drivetrains, offering more versatility to the customer.

At its recent inaugural investor day, Hyundai India announced that it will launch a slew of new SUVs over the next 5 years. The next-gen Tucson could be one of them when the model gets launched globally. A hybrid model of the SUV could also make its way here as the hybrids form a huge chunk of Hyundai’s plans for India. The current generation of the SUV already comes with a plug-in hybrid option in many global markets, but it hasn’t been brought to India.

BS-III Petrol, BS-IV Diesel Cars Banned In Delhi NCR As Pollution Levels Rise

In view of rising Air Quality Index (AQI) levels across Delhi NCR, the Commision of Air Quality Management (CAQM) has issued directions to implement the stage III of Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to curb the worsening air pollution levels. This in effect means that all BS-III Petrol and BS-IV Diesel vehicles cannot be driven in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad till the AQI numbers improve.

For the first time this season, the AQI levels have crossed the 400 mark in Delhi-NCR and have come in ‘severe’ category. However vehicles being driven by persons with disabilities are exempt from the rule. There’s already a restriction in place on BS-IV and older Diesel goods vehicles in Delhi.

All cars sold before April 2020 come in the BS-IV category while BS-III norms came into effect in the country in April 2010. The fine for violating these rules can be up to Rs. 20,000. The GRAP Stage 3 norms are likely to be revoked only after the AQI levels stay consistently below the 400 mark.

Honda CB300R Discontinued In India

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has pulled the plug on the CB300R, effectively delisting the neo-retro streetfighter from the official website. The motorcycle has not been on sale for a few months now, with leftover stock having been cleared by BigWing dealers earlier in the year. No fresh orders were being accepted for the CB300R, and the motorcycle was also missing from Honda's revised model-wise price list post the GST 2.0 rollout.

Honda CB 300 R 1

Launched in 2019 via the CKD route, the CB300R arrived at Rs 2.41 lakh and quickly drew attention with Honda claiming a strong initial response. Over the years, the company introduced periodic updates, including a refreshed version in early 2022 priced at Rs 2.77 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Later, in October 2023, the model received a price cut as Honda increased localisation and aligned the motorcycle with newer emission norms.

The CB300R was powered by a 286 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine producing 30.7 bhp and 27.5 Nm, paired with a 6-speed gearbox equipped with assist and slipper clutch. Moreover, one of the USPs of the CB300R was its kerb weight. At 146 kg, it was one of the lightest offerings in its class.
