Toyota Spins Off Century As New Standalone Brand; Unveils New Century Coupe Concept At Japan Mobility Show 2025

While the Toyota Motor Corporation unveiled a series of concepts under the Toyota, Lexus and Daihatsu brands, perhaps one of the biggest news was the launch of Century as a separate entity to Toyota and Lexus, alongside debuting a new Coupe-SUV concept.

Also read: Japan Mobility Show 2025: Lexus LS 6-Wheel Van Concept Previews Future Of Luxury MPVs

 Akio Toyoda Toyota Century

Speaking at the Japan Mobility Show, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda said, “Century is more than just the name of a car. It is a heartfelt desire for world peace, and an endeavour to shape the next one hundred years from Japan. That is what the Century means to me. With Shoichiro's passing, I came to see this as my personal mission. Of course, I cannot do it on my own. Thankfully, at Toyota, we have many colleagues who carry on the spirit of Kenya Nakamura. Together, we have decided to launch the Century brand. "One of One" or as Nakamura put it, "To be like no other." Century is not just another brand within Toyota Motor Corporation. We want to cultivate it as a brand that brings the spirit of Japan―the pride of Japan―out into the world.”

Kenya Nakamura was the project leader behind the first-gen Toyota Century and also credited for his work on the Crown sedan.

 Toyota Century Coupe Concept 1

The move looks to establish the Century nameplate alongside the likes of European ultra luxury car brands such as Bentley and Rolls-Royce, with the Century brand positioned above Lexus - hints of which Toyota previously previewed in the buildup to the Mobility Show.
 Toyota Century Coupe Concept 2

As for the concept, the Coupe-SUV looks to be based on the current Century SUV but featuring extensive design updates. Up front, the concept features a unique body-coloured cheese-grater grille bearing the Century phoenix emblem flanked by a quad headlamp set-up reminiscent of the SUV. The concept also retains the boxy proportions of the SUV, too.

Also read: Toyota Camry GT-S Concept Revealed Ahead Of 2025 SEMA Show Debut
 Toyota Century Coupe Concept 3

It’s when viewed in profile that the concept really stands apart from the production SUV. The concept gets a coupe-style roofline that flows neatly into the rear boot lip and a unique three-door arrangement. The driver's side features a single forward sliding door, while the co-driver side features a full-size front-sliding door and a rear-sliding half door for ease of entry to the rear seats.
 Toyota Century Coupe Concept 5

As with the production Century siblings, the concept too puts the focus on being chauffeur-driven - the co-driver side lacks a front seat. The driver seat is separated from he rest of the cabin via a unique vertical partial partition, while the co-driver seat has been deleted to free up space for the rear occupant to really stretch out. The driver themselves get a digital instrument cluster behind a yoke-style steering flanked by twin smaller displays for varying in-car and infotainment functions.

Also read: Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Unveiled: 'Baby LC' 4x4 Is Smaller Than A Fortuner

The cabin also hides smaller luxury design touches such as a coat hanger built into a central spine that spans the length of the roof and an umbrella tucked away into a dedicated housing on the rear bulkhead behind the passenger seat. The rear co-driver side seat also rotates outwards for ease of entry and egress.
 Toyota Century Coupe Concept 4

No powertrain details have been shared for the coupe, though it could feature the same strong hybrid set-up as the standard SUV if it makes it to production.

Given the nature of the announcement and the following concept, the Century coupe concept could be seen as a statement of intent from Toyota as it spins off the Century brand from being a flagship model under the Toyota nameplate to its own dedicated line, which could include its own unique sales channels.

Aside from the concept, Toyota also showcased a sportier-looking Century GRMN with blacked-out detailing as well as a Century SUV Tailor Made in what could be a new customisation programme.

Japan Mobility Show 2025: Lexus LS 6-Wheel Van Concept Previews Future Of Luxury MPVs

The next big step in luxury motoring, it appears, is adding another axle to an already substantial vehicle. Lexus, which has long retailed a full-size luxury sedan under the ‘LS’ name, is aware that sedans are fast losing ground to the SUV craze, but instead of building an SUV with that name, the company has decided to go all out with a completely different body style – an MPV. The Lexus LS concept unveiled at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show is a van with six wheels, with two at the front, and four wheels at the back. It is a behemoth of a van, to put it simply.

lexus ls 6 wheeler concept shows future of luxury mpvs carandbike japan mobility show 2025 3

Imposing front end with edgy lighting elements.

Why is the new Lexus LS a van instead of a sedan?

“Once upon a time, executive sedans ruled the automotive world. Now, they are fighting a losing battle with SUVs”, remarked Lexus Chief Branding Officer Simon Humphries at the unveiling of the LS concept. In the company's words, ‘LS’ no longer means luxury sedan or Luxury SUV. Instead, it denotes Luxury Space.

lexus ls 6 wheeler concept shows future of luxury mpvs carandbike japan mobility show 2025 1

Four rear wheels are significantly smaller than the front wheels.

Freed by the rethinking of that abbreivation, Lexus chose to build a super-sized MPV, which, from the front, looks like several other Lexus concepts we've seen in recent times. It employs edgy styling, with slender LED lighting up front, with an illuminated Lexus wordmark sitting proudly on the nose.

It's in profile that the Lexus LS concept really stuns you. It is ultra-long – likely over 6 metres in length – with slim displays incorporated into the front doors. The front wheels – likely to be 21- or 22-inch units – are illuminated, as are the four, significantly smaller wheels at the back. The LS has sliding doors with what appear grille-type extensions in place of rear windows, to ensure privacy.

lexus ls 6 wheeler concept shows future of luxury mpvs carandbike japan mobility show 2025 2

The LS concept dwarfs the likes of the Lexus LM and Toyota Vellfire.

What is the Lexus LS Concept's interior like?

The phrase ‘lounge on wheels’ gets thrown around a lot, but if there is one concept that has come closest to bringing that idea to life, it is this one. At the front, the Lexus LS concept has a yoke-style steering wheel, a handful of large, physical buttons, a wide infotainment screen and what appears to be a wraparound second screen right behind it.

lexus ls 6 wheeler concept shows future of luxury mpvs carandbike japan mobility show 2025 5

Yoke-style steering and twin displays included.

The highlight, though is in the ‘VIP-centred’ second row, which replaces conventional captain chairs with what can be best described as a full-size lounge recliner. Even the third row of seats have an incredible amount of space – enabled by the fitment of smaller rear wheels. There's also a split, fixed glass roof, and the tailgate opens hatch-style to reveal a fairly roomy boot with wooden flooring.

lexus ls 6 wheeler concept shows future of luxury mpvs carandbike japan mobility show 2025 11

Lounge recliner-like second row is built ‘for VIPs’.

Will the Lexus LS 6-wheel concept go into production?

At this time, Lexus has not mentioned if it intends to put the 6-wheeled van into production. However, given the wild popularity of the Lexus LM – which has been snapped up by the wealthy in India – and other luxury MPVs, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Lexus pulling the trigger and building a road-going version of this concept.

The model evolves from the Super EV Concept, first showcased at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and now appears closer to its production form.

The Super-ONE builds on the platform of the compact N-ONE e electric kei car. The pocket-sized EV wears a newly designed body kit that includes wider fenders and provides a lower stance. The fenders accommodate wider tyres, and to complement the look, Honda has added functional front and rear air ducts.

At the front, it features circular LED headlights integrated into a closed-off fascia. The charging port flaps sit within the nose section. The black roof, ORVMs, and alloy wheels with red brake calipers add to the overall look.

At the rear, rectangular taillights are positioned at the lower edges of the large rear windscreen. The black tailgate panel carries the Honda nameplate, and a roof-mounted spoiler extends slightly outward. Subtle contours on the bumper and integrated vents complete the look on the pint-sized model.

The interior of the Honda Super-ONE has a straightforward approach. The dashboard is simple in design, with a horizontal layout housing a central touchscreen display and rectangular air vents. The two-spoke steering wheel includes mounted controls and carries the Honda logo. A compact centre console divides the front seats, containing the gear selector, cupholders, and a small storage compartment.

Honda has yet to reveal specific powertrain details for the Super-ONE, but the company has confirmed that the prototype features a simulated seven-speed transmission and an Active Sound Control system that replicates the sound of a high-performance engine. When driven in Boost mode, both the virtual gear shifts and the synthetic engine note are activated.
